Steel Coupling /Steel Socket

The pipe coupling or pipe socket ismost often of very short length in the pipeline. With a socket at one or bothends, it allows two pipes to be connected together. Usually, the connectionmethod has the following types, welded connection, brazed connection, solderedconnection.

Alternatively it is a short length of pipewith two female National pipe threads (NPT) (in NorthAmerican terms, a coupler is a double female while a nipple is double male) ortwo male or female British standard pipe threads.

If the two ends of a steel socket are different (e.g. one isBSP thread, and the other is NPT thread), then this type of pipe coupling isreferred to as an adapter. Another variation is one plain socket and one threadedsocket. Yet another variation would be 3/4" NPT to 1/2" NPT.

When the two ends use the same connection methodbut are of a different size, the terms reducing coupling orreducer areused.
