Lycopene (Natural)

Lycopene is a bright red carotene, carotenoid pigment and phytochemical.It is an important intermediate in thebiosynthesis of many carotenoids like beta carotene. It is also responsible for synthesizingyellow, orange or red pigmentation, photosynthesis, and photo-protection.
Like all carotenoids, lycopeneis a polyunsaturated hydrocarbon, which is an unsubstantiated alkene. Structurally, it is a tetraterpene assembled from eight isopreneunits, composedentirely of carbon and hydrogen, and is insoluble in water. Lycopene\'s eleven conjugated double bonds giveit a deep red color and are responsible for its antioxidant activity.
Due to its strong color andnon-toxicity, lycopene is a useful food coloring. When absorbed from the stomach, lycopene istransported in the blood by various lipoproteins and accumulates in the liver,adrenal glands and testes.
