FPC,flexible printed circuit

The flexible printed circuit (FPC), as a kind of special printed circuit board, is lightweight, thin, soft and flexible. It is typically used in cell phones, notebook computers, personal digital assistants (PDAs), digital cameras, liquid crystal displays (LCDs), and others.

Structure
According to the layers of conductive copper foils, the FPC can be divided into single layer board, double side board, double layer board, and multilayer board, etc.

Single Layer FPC
Compared to other flexible printed circuit, the single layer FPC has the simplest structure. The sequence of the structure from bottom to top is base plate, adhesive, copper foil, adhesive, and protection film. The lowest layer can be reinforced, if necessary.

Double Side FPC
On both sides of the double side FPC, there are bonding pads used to connect circuit boards. The component parts of the double side FPC are protection film, adhesion agent, copper foil, adhesion agent, base plate, adhesive, copper foil, adhesive and protection film, from bottom to top.

Double Layer FPC and Multilayer FPC
When the single layer flexible printed circuit can not satisfy the wiring needs of complicated circuit, the double layer FPC and multilayer FPC are used as ideal alternatives. The multilayer FPC, compared to the single layer board, boasts the via hole design to facilitate connection between copper foils. From bottom to top, the component layers of the multilayer FPC are base plate, adhesive, copper foil, adhesive, and so on, and finally protection film.

Materials
The flexible printed circuit (FPC) consists of five parts, including

1. Base plate: commonly made of polyester imide (PI).

2. Copper foil: divided into electrolytic copper foil and rolled copper foil

3. Adhesive: generally 0.5mil epoxy resin thermoset adhesive.

4. Protection film: made using PI for surface insulation.

5. Reinforcement: to improve the mechanical strength of the flexible printed circuit board.
